TSGA notes approval of first GMO salmon in the USA

November 22, 2015

As an industry TSGA supports the position of the International Salmon Farmers Association (ISFA), viz. that salmon farmers worldwide should not support the production of transgenic fish for food consumption until they have been proven safe and the market demands it.

TSGA members do not produce salmon which have been genetically engineered by the insertion of external genetic material or new DNA from other organisms.

The salmonid industry is committed to providing a wholesome product that is safe for human consumption. All food producers need to get better at producing more food with fewer resources while continuing to reduce the ecological footprint of their production. This may mean producers need to closely evaluate new technology and genetic advancements. To turn our back on modern genetics and bio-technology would be irresponsible and short-sighted.

There will be limits to the extent to which agriculture/food producers can become more efficient and remain competitive.  Accordingly, TSGA acknowledges that for certain industry sectors the adoption of advanced genetics, management practices and biotechnologies is strategic and warranted.

We respect the right of any other industry sector to adopt a position contrary to that of TSGA and its Members.
